Each one of my pieces is decorated while in the 'bone-dry' phase (just prior to the first firing) While this is the most breakable stage of pottery making, it allows me to get these soft, dreamy colours without any running or mixing happening! The stars and moons are handcut resists that I individually place before airbrushing the piece. I blend my own pigments using commercial underglaze & mason stains; about 5 different colours/shades are used at a time to get the effect I aim for! As always, my goal is to create a sturdy yet delicate piece that is deceptively lightweight; I make my handles hollow to help achieve this! The thumbrest is made using a vintage wax seal, and the whole piece is accented with 22kt gold after the 2nd fire! This magical piece will be featured at the Small Works | Big Impact fundraiser in support of The Tina Dolter Gallery out in Corner Brooke Newfoundland! The cherry blossoms are made with porcelain, individually shaped by hand. I finish them with an irridescent and 22kt luster! The monstera leaf was made with a speckled stoneware to help my glaze develop this mottled pattern. It's one of the only coloured glazes I use, and I adore it This piece is 'optionally interactive' as the blossoms are repositionable (or removable). This was a special request, and I'm so pleased with how it came out! I wanted to design a cardinal that showed both wings, so I used an 18/20g copper wire suspended over the glass to do this. It's my favorite time of year! Fair & Square @easternedge.arc This fundraiser is an opportunity to challenge myself a little bit, and I am SO HAPPY with this year's result! All submitted works for this event are on 8x8 pine board panel, so obviously, I started by making tiles for mine (I'm a sucker for a diagonal install) I thrifted the lighting fixture base, then redesigned and built new glass for it - I hord this pink glass, it's just so special!! The piece is wired to a standard polarized outlet and has a lovely black fabric cord. I have it ready to hang, but it is also a free-standing piece if that's more your taste.
